Total Time Allocated for the GRE
The total time allocated for the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is approximately 1 hour and 48 minutes. It contains six sections, each to test different skills, with time divided among them as follows:
- Analytical Writing 30 min: The Analytical Writing section includes one essay task called “Analyze an Issue.” You’ll respond to a general statement by presenting your perspective in a well-structured argument. It tests your ability to think critically, organize ideas clearly, and support your viewpoint with relevant examples.
- Verbal Reasoning 41 minutes: Verbal reasoning is divided into two segments and assesses your reading comprehension and ability to analyze written text. There are around 12–14 questions for reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence in each segment. You will need to interpret meaning, understand vocabulary in context, and make logical inferences.
- Quantitative Reasoning 47 Minutes: Quantitative reasoning splits into two parts, tests your math ability and problem-solving capacity using arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. You will be faced with problems like quantitative comparisons, problem-solving, and data interpretation. It's less about formulas and more about strategy and logic.
GRE Scoring System
The GRE uses a scoring system that varies by section:
- The Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE is scored from 130 to 170. Scores go up in 1-point increments, so you might get a 130, a 131, a 132, and then it keeps going on in that way, no fractions or decimals. That provides 41 possible different scores that you can get in this section.
- Quantitative reasoning: scores also range from 130 to 170, with each increment representing 1 point.
- The analytical writing assessment (AWA) is graded on a scale of 0 to 6, with scores awarded in increments of half points.
Here is a list of the score ranges, general skill levels, and their respective percentiles:
This test does not provide a single combined score.Instead, most of the schools test each section separately, and the requirements for the scores will differ based on the program and institution.
