Total IELTS Test Time: Section-by-Section Overview
IELTS tests are divided into four sections. The total IELTS examination takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Time allowed for each section is listed below:
- Listening 30 minutes: You will have the opportunity to listen to four audio recordings and answer 40 questions. Test takers who choose to take the paper-based version of the exam will have an additional 10 minutes to transfer their answers onto paper. In contrast, computer-based test takers input their responses directly into the test.
- Reading 60 minutes: Reading section includes 40 questions based on three reading passages. General training version and Academic differ in content but have the same format.
- Writing 60 minutes: The Writing section includes 2 tasks. Task 1 is describing visual data or writing a letter, and Task 2 is writing an essay. You must complete both tasks within the hour, and there is no additional time.
- Speaking 11–14 minutes: A speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. This section includes three parts: a 1–2 minute speech and a follow-up discussion.
The listening, reading, and writing sections are completed in one sitting without breaks.
However, speaking tests can be planned on the same day or up to 7 days before or after other tests.
In the computer-delivered IELTS, there’s no extra 10 minutes after Listening for answer transfer, but you get time during the test to review and submit.
IELTS Scoring System
IELTS uses a 0-9 band score system for each of its four components: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The total overall ligament scores are attributed to the average of the four component values, which are calculated with the whole gang or half.

In most cases, a minimum band score of 6.0 is considered sufficient to meet the English language requirements for academic programs, job applications, or visa processes.
