SAT has become more student-friendly, with a return to the 1600 scoring scale, a focus on real-world skills, and it has become a fully digital format since 2024. SAT remains a valuable tool to help your academic strengths and get into top colleges.

Total Duration of the SAT Exam

The SAT is a test used for college admissions in the United States. This evaluation is designed to gauge your readiness for advanced academic pursuits. The entire SAT exam, without any breaks and the optional essay section, lasts for a total of 3 hours. The comprehensive breakdown of the duration for each segment:

  • Reading (65 minutes): The reading tests your ability to comprehend passages from various subjects, such as literature, historical documents, social sciences, and natural sciences.
  • Writing and Language (35 minutes): In writing and language, you will be asked to revise and edit texts for clarity, grammar, punctuation, and style. This test checks how well you can understand and improve your English.
  • Math without calculator (25 minutes): The math test assesses your math skills, and it won’t allow you to use a calculator. This test assesses algebraic, arithmetic, and problem-solving abilities. It requires you to work more efficiently and accurately.
  • Math With Calculator (55 minutes): In this math test, you are allowed to use the calculator to solve problems that may involve advanced algebra, data analysis, and some trigonometry. It tests your ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios.
  • Optional Essay Discontinued in 2021 for most students (50 minutes): The College Board has phased out the SAT essays for most students; however, some states and school districts still offer them. Optional essays require you to read a passage and analyze how the author builds arguments.

SAT Scoring System

The SAT has fully transitioned to a digital format in 2024, it has several changes to how the test is structured and scored. Digital SAT scores out of a total of 1600 points, and it has two main sections: Reading and Writing (scored from 200-800) and Math (also scored from 200-800). The scores are then combined to form your final score. In the new version, the essay section has been completely removed and is no longer part of the test.

One of the most notable innovations is the use of adaptive testing, with each section split into two modules. The performance in the first module determines the level of the second, so the test becomes more individualized and accurate in assessing your skills. The digital version also reduces the test by about 2 hours and 14 minutes, and you have the advantage of using a calculator throughout the Math section. As before, there's no penalty for wrong answers, so it's always worthwhile guessing if you're not sure.
